When to Repair vs. Replace Your Air Conditioner

Deciding whether to repair or replace your air conditioner can be a tough call for homeowners. You want to stay comfortable during the hot summer months, but you also want to make a smart financial decision. While small repairs are often the most economical choice in the short term, there comes a point when investing in a new, energy-efficient system is the better long-term solution.

If your AC has been acting up, here’s a guide to help you determine when it’s time to repair—and when it’s time to consider a full system replacement.

1. Age of the System

One of the most important factors is your AC unit’s age. Most air conditioners are built to last around 10 to 15 years. If your unit is over 10 years old and experiencing issues, replacement may be the better choice, especially if it’s nearing the end of its expected lifespan. Newer models offer far better efficiency and features that can save you money over time.

Repair if: Your system is less than 10 years old and in generally good condition.

Replace if: Your unit is over 10–15 years old and has frequent problems.

2. Cost of Repairs

A good rule of thumb: If a repair will cost more than 50% of the price of a new unit, it’s usually more economical to replace the system. Additionally, if you’re facing repeated repair bills year after year, those costs can quickly exceed the price of a new, more reliable system.

Repair if: The fix is minor and affordable.

Replace if: The repair is major or if costs are piling up year after year.

3. Frequency of Breakdowns

Are you calling your HVAC technician more than once a season? Constant breakdowns are more than just frustrating—they’re a sign your system is failing. Repeated issues are a strong indicator that your AC is on its last legs, and pouring money into temporary fixes won’t solve the underlying problem.

Repair if: Issues are occasional and not affecting comfort.

Replace if: You’ve needed multiple repairs in the last year or two.

4. Energy Efficiency

Older systems simply don’t perform as efficiently as newer models. Modern air conditioners must meet SEER2 (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio 2) standards, and upgrading can reduce your energy bills significantly, especially if your current unit struggles to keep your home cool.

Repair if: Your utility bills are steady and your home stays comfortable.

Replace if: Your bills are climbing and your AC runs constantly without delivering results.

5. Comfort and Air Quality

If some rooms in your home are consistently hotter or more humid than others, or if your AC struggles to maintain a steady temperature, it may be time for an upgrade. A new system can provide more even cooling, improved humidity control, and better air filtration, all of which contribute to a healthier, more comfortable home.

6. Refrigerant Type

If your system still uses R-22 refrigerant (phased out due to environmental concerns), repairs can be both expensive and limited. Replacing your AC with one that uses the newer, more eco-friendly R-410A refrigerant will ensure your system is compliant and more cost-effective to maintain.
