Maintenance Tips for Ductless Heating Systems

If you have a ductless heating system, there are some maintenance steps that you have to complete each month as a homeowner. Taking care of your ductless heat pump is the best way to ensure its longevity and energy efficiency. While the maintenance steps are very similar to those that you would complete with a central air conditioner, they are also fairly different.

And if you notice anything unusual about the way your ductless unit is operating, you can give us a call to schedule heat pump service in Campbell County, WY. You can also keep reading to learn more about the maintenance steps that you need to complete as a homeowner and why professional maintenance is equally important.

Clean the Air Filters

Each individual ductless unit in your home has its own small air filter. Once a month, you need to remove this air filter and clean it off. If it is particularly dirty, you may need to clean it off more than once per month. The task may be as simple as wiping it off, but sometimes you may need to rinse out the air filter and clean it more thoroughly.

Clean the Outdoor Unit

It’s also important to clean the outdoor portion of your ductless unit. Even though there is not a central indoor unit attached to a ductless system, there is still a single outdoor unit. Since it is exposed to the weather and elements around the clock all year long, it’s easy for the outdoor unit to get dirty. You can hose it off using gentle water pressure to clear away dirt.

You can also make sure that the space around your unit is completely free from any yard decorations or debris like tree branches. This allows heat and exhaust air to escape outside effectively so that each of the individual units can work at their best to keep your home warm or cool, depending on your temperature settings.

Dust and Clean

One of the easiest ways to take care of a ductless HVAC system is by dusting and vacuuming regularly. We know that it’s easy to put those household chores aside during the holiday season when things are busy, but eliminating as much dust and dirt from your home as possible is a great way to lessen the load on a ductless system. Since all of the components inside ductless units are smaller, dust and dirt can have a greater impact.

Allow Space

Make sure there is always extra space around each of your ductless units. Ideally, you should have at least three feet of space from top to bottom and or on either side. It can be easy to rearrange furniture and not think about blocking your ductless unit.

Allowing space helps to prioritize safety, as well as optimizing how well your ductless unit is able to heat and cool your home. If airflow gets blocked, then it may be trapped in the system instead of reaching your home.
